Art Rock Show – Amplifier – Gargantuan (Week 22)

Amplifier is een Engelse rockband afkomstig uit Manchester. De band heeft sinds de oprichting in 1999 acht studioalbums en acht EP’s uitgebracht. Hun muziek wordt wel omschreven als “Soundgarden, Tool, Black Sabbath, Oceansize en Pink Floyd die overvloedige hoeveelheden geestverruimende middelen nemen en zich wagen aan een reis door tijd en ruimte (naar een andere dimensie), en weer terug.

Mario van Os van Prog Wereld: “Het album opent met een stevig drumintro en opzwepende riffs. De melodieuze patronen zetten een progressieve poppy sound neer die kenmerkend is voor de Britse poprock. De band grijpt daarmee terug op vijftig jaar popgeschiedenis en allerlei invloeden zoals Tool, Oceansize, Manic Street Preachers en zovelen meer die ook in eerdere recensies zijn genoemd. Psychedelic, heavy, prog and more innovating sounds spanning the late 60s and the early 70s – Dan’s pick of the week: Moondog (Moondog), Terry Riley (A Rainbow in Curved Air), The Residents (Meet the Residents), Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (Lick My Decals off, Baby) Silver Apples (Silver Apples) & Henry Cow (Concerts).

Moondog was de artiestennaam van Louis T. Hardin, een Amerikaans componist, musicus en dichter. Behalve nieuwe muziek vond hij ook nieuwe instrumenten uit, hoewel hij blind was. Vanaf 1950 tot 1974 verbleef Moondog als straatmuzikant in New York, op 53rd Street en 6th Avenue. Meestal was hij als Viking gekleed. Hij verkocht zijn eigen gedichten aan voorbijgangers.
